General rules applicable to all competitions :
1. Competitions are open to all members unless otherwise stated. 2. Members who have not renewed their subscriptions will not be allowed to compete in any competition until such payments are made. 3. For the purpose of internal competitions, monochrome and colour prints will follow these definitions : Monochrome : a monochrome print may be : (a) straight black and white, or (b) toned or dyed overall in one colour, or (c) part-toned or dyed in one colour Colour : Anything else, including hand-tinting, derivatives, etc. 4. Computer generated imagery is not acceptable, but computer enhanced or manipulated photographic images are acceptable. 5. The entrant must have originated and must own the copyright of all work submitted. This applies equally to all components of composite images (whether assembled by traditional or digital means). The use of “copyright free” or “clip art” material is not acceptable. 6. Entries : (a) All members may enter ALL competitions in the programme, unless otherwise stated. (b) Size and format : (i) In print competitions, entries must be unmounted and unsigned (ii) Entries must carry a title. With prints the title may be displayed at the front on the image border, or else written at the back. (iii) For prints, the longest side of the entry must not exceed 40 cm (16 inches). No minimum size is stipulated (iv) In digital projection competitions, entries must be on CD, or USB stick, using TIFF or JPEG. (v) In print competitions, members must bring digital copies of the images so that they can be added to the images database, and also avoid losing quality when scanned. (c) Number : No more than 3 separate images per competition. (d) Themes : See specific rules below (e) Points : In all competitions excepting Portfolio competitions and Beginners competitions, the judge(s) will select the best six photographs (or sets), and place them in order of merit from 1st to 3rd, and six runners-up.
Points will then be awarded as follows : 1st : 10 points 2nd : 7 points 3rd : 5 points Runners-up : 3 points each Every other non-winning entry : 1 point
In Portfolio competitions (non beginners), the points will be awarded as follows: 1st portfolio-12 points for the portfolio 2nd portfolio-9 points for the portfolio 3rd portfolio-7 points for the portfolio Runners-up-5 points for each portfolio Every other non-winning porfolio-3 points per portfolio
In Beginners competitions, entries will be judged by two advanced members, and each judge will award each entry points on the scale from 0 to 5. If there is only one judge, then each entry will be awarded points on the scale from 0 to 10. No half points will be awarded.
(f) (i) Photographs which have come in the first three in any competitions cannot be re-entered in any subsequent monthly competition, even if reproduced in a different medium. (ii) The same applies to photographs which have come 1st or 2nd , or won a Challenge Trophy in any Annual Competitive Exhibition. (iii) Photographs which have come in the first three in any of the monthly competitions can be entered in the Annual Competitive Exhibition in any year.
(g) In the event of a draw at the end of any set of competitions, and also in determining the Photographer of the Year and Beginner of the Year awards, the winning order will be decided on by which member has obtained the most firsts in the set, then seconds, etc.
(h) Winning photographs may be retained for a week or two for Society promotion purposes and for exhibiting on the Society’s board at the John Mackintosh Hall once this has been sorted out.
7. Photographer of the Year
This award will be determined by adding all the points accrued in all competitions held during the course of the year, but not including the Beginners competitions.
8. Beginner of the Year
This award will be determined by adding all the points accrued in all Beginners competitions held during the year.

MONOCHROME PRINTS COMPETITIONS :
1. These competitions are open to all members 2. The person with the highest aggregate of points in these competitions at the end of the year will receive the Society Challenge Cup.
3. Themes : Oct 12 URBAN LANDSCAPE Nov 23 TEXTURE Jan 18 WATER Mar 1 STREET LIFE Apr 12 OLD
DIGITAL PROJECTION COMPETITIONS :
1. These competitions are open to all members 2. The person with the highest aggregate of points in these competitions at the end of the year will receive the Kodak Challenge Trophy.
3. Themes : Sep 28 TRAVEL Nov 9 POPPING COLOUR (Monochrome with colour) Jan 4 PEOPLE AT LEISURE Feb 15 BLUE Mar 29 NATURAL WORLD
COLOUR PRINTS COMPETITIONS :
1. These competitions are open to all members 2. The person with the highest aggregate of points in these competitions at the end of the year will receive the Fotolab Challenge Cup
3. Themes : Oct 26 A SMALL WORLD Dec 7 SIMPLICITY Feb 1 CITY BY NIGHT Mar 15 BEAUTIFUL BLUR Apr 27 Portfolio of three prints: theme: OPEN, but the three prints must be on the same theme
BEGINNERS PRINTS COMPETITIONS
1. These competitions are only open to members classified as Beginners 2. Entries may be in monochrome or colour 3. Themes : all OPEN 4. The person winning the highest aggregate of points in these competitions at the end of the year will receive the E Pardo Challenge Cup.
BEGINNERS MONOCHROME PRINTS COMPETITION
1. This competition is only open to members classified as Beginners 2. Entries must be monochrome 3. Trophies will be awarded to the best two prints 4. The winning print will receive the H Linares Challenge Cup
BEGINNERS PORTFOLIO COMPETITION
1. This competition is only open to members classified as Beginners 2. Entries may be monochrome or colour or both 3. Trophies will be awarded to the best two portfolios. 4. The winning portfolio will receive the D Booth Challenge Trophy. 5. Each competitor will submit one portfolio consisting of 4 prints, each on a different theme. These themes are : ACTION/MOVEMENT : this may depict frozen motion or blurred action LANDSCAPE / SEASCAPE : apart from the obvious this includes urban landscape PEOPLE : this can be one or more persons, and includes portraits NATURE : all aspects of nature are accepted, including such things as rocks, and the weather, and, for the purposes of this competition, pets. 6. Photographs must be labelled as to which theme they represent.
